Many people think it’s impossible to do their own car repairs, an attitude that forces them to pay hundreds of dollars for things that can easily be done even by someone without much mechanical inclination.
Take changing your oil as an example. After watching a quick Youtube video or online tutorial, it’s not very hard to figure out how to do it. The only thing stopping someone is having the right equipment, but that can easily be acquired. It’s a good investment to spend $100 on things like ramps and wrenches if that’ll save $150 per year in oil change fees.
The air conditioning stopped working in my old car. Rather than take it to a shop and a potential $500 bill, I did a little searching and realized I could buy a kit that would temporarily fix the problem for $50. An hour later, I had air conditioning, and an extra $450 in my pocket. The fix lasted for longer than a year.
There are countless other examples. Changing out a taillight is easy. Headlights are marginally harder, but still very doable. Often, electrical problems are just burnt out fuses which can be replaced for less than $5. Oil filters are simple too. There’s a reason why mechanics are always trying to change them for you.
Leave the hard car repairs to the expert and at least make an effort to do the less difficult things yourself. It’s an easy way to save money.
