New ‘Scream’ Movie Tops Weekend Box Office With $30.6 Million Haul

“Scream,” a reimagining of the iconic horror franchise, dominated the North American box office this past weekend, earning $30.6 million U.S. in ticket receipts.

The sequel is projected to earn $35 million U.S. over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, a strong result considering that “Scream” only cost $25 million U.S. to produce.

Reigning box office champ “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was forced to surrender its crown for the first time since it opened in December. However, the Marvel superhero sequel still grossed $20.8 million U.S. over the weekend and $26 million U.S. over the four-day holiday period.

That brings Spider-Man: No Way Home’s total box office gross to more than $700 million U.S. and will soon become the fourth-highest grossing domestic release in history, behind only “Avatar” ($760 million U.S.), “Avengers: Endgame” ($858 million U.S.) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million U.S.).

Universal Pictures “Sing 2” captured third place at the domestic box office this past weekend, earning $8.3 million U.S. The film is projected to earn $11 million U.S. over the four-day holiday, which will bring its cumulative total to $122.1 million U.S.

Most movie studios are holding their more compelling films for release later in the spring or summer, but there are a few upcoming high-profile releases, including “The Batman” and “Uncharted.”
