June new car sales dip in Canada

A decline in passenger car sales in Canada led to an overall drop of 0.6 in the sale of new vehicles in June, Statistics Canada reported from Ottawa Friday.

The report said 119,961 new vehicles were sold in June, and the agency said preliminary data indicates July would see a 5 percent gain.

June truck sales exceeded passenger car sales for the third consecutive month, with 60,932 units sold, a 0.2 percent decline from May.

The number of new passenger cars sold in June was down 1 percent to 59,038 vehicles, StatsCan said.

''Sales of new motor vehicles have generally been rising since the beginning of 2009 after a sharp decline in the latter part of 2008,'' the agency said. ''Despite this recent upward trend, sales levels have been well below those of recent years.''
