A recent survey of more than 1,900 Canadian employers found that 17% expect to see higher payrolls in the second quarter of 2010.
That compares with 6% of respondents who anticipate a smaller workforce and about three-quarters who expect to stay the course. The survey was conducted by Manpower Canada, a private-sector company that provides staffing services to employers.
Manpower says, overall, the hiring climate for the upcoming quarter is "modest."
The survey rates the net employment outlook at 7%, which is up six percentage points from the same time last year.
However, Manpower says the outlook has weakened since the previous quarter when the net employment outlook was 10%.
