Auto sales in Canada declined for the ninth straight month in November, falling 9.4% to 143,668 vehicles sold.
The continued decline comes after record sales in 2017. This year (2018) will mark the first 12-month period since 2009 that auto sales have not expanded, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., which tracks Canadian auto sales nationwide. Overall, annual sales in Canada, year-to-date, are 44,000 lower than in 2017.
In November 2018, passenger car sales in Canada fell 11.4% compared with last year to 30,031 sold. Light truck sales were down 8.7% to 104,737, but continue to dominate the North American market.
General Motors, which last week announced it is closing its Oshawa assembly plant, saw its sales slide 18.3% annually to 19,296 vehicles sold in November. All the Big Three automakers saw declines in the month, with Ford down 10.7% to 21,223 and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles down 35.1% to 12,366. Toyota was a lone bright spot in Canada during November with 16,787 cars and light trucks sold, an 11.5% increase.
