The number of foreigners visiting Canada remains below pre-pandemic levels as the country’s tourism sector continues to recover from the Covid-19 crisis.
According to Statistics Canada, non-resident visitors to Canada and returning Canadian residents accounted for 81.4% of the level observed in April 2019 before the pandemic began.
In April of this year, 373,200 overseas residents arrived in Canada, up 54.4% from 241,700 in April 2022 but only about three-quarters (77%) of the number of overseas arrivals seen during April 2019, before the pandemic struck.
More than two-fifths (161,200) of overseas visitors to Canada came from Europe in April of this year.
Visitors from the neighboring U.S. numbered 1.3 million this April, up 71.2% from 759,600 in April 2022 but only 82% of pre-pandemic levels.
At the same time, there were 875,900 return trips taken by Canadian residents overseas this April, up 23.6% from the same month in 2022 but still well below the 1.2 million trips taken in April 2019.
In April, Canadian residents returned from 3.2 million trips to the U.S., which was 84% of the pre-pandemic level.
