Toronto is number one!
But being first in Canada when it comes to expenses isn’t something to cheer about, for most people.
A cost-of-living survey conducted by consulting firm Mercer ranks Toronto as the most expensive city in Canada, overtaking the former costliest Canuck city, Vancouver.
On a global scale, Toronto is the 59th most expensive city in which to live. Vancouver is 65th, Montreal 79th and Calgary came in 96th. Ottawa came in at 114th globally, making it the least-expensive city in Canada included in the survey of 214 urban centres around the world.
The annual study takes things such as housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment into account when calculating rankings. The Mercer survey is designed to help multinational corporations and governments determine compensation allowances for employees.
Luanda, the capital of Angola was ranked as the most expensive city in the world, followed by Tokyo, N’Djamena in Chad, Moscow and Geneva.
New York City was the named the most expensive American city to live in, ranking of 32nd globally.
