Vehicles sold in January jumped 15.4% from the month prior to 153,623 units, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday, noting the spike was due in large part to resumption of supply for certain models of passenger cars.
Passenger car sales surged 23.9% to 71,539 units in the month on higher sales of lower-cost and North American vehicles,which jumped 28.5%, StatCan reported. Imported vehicle sales rose for the fifth consecutive month, up 16.5%.
Truck sales advanced 8.8% in January to 82,084, following declines in the two previous months, according to the report.
New motor vehicle sales increased in every province for the month, with Ontario leading the way with an advance of 23.7%. Alberta saw the largest growth in sales for the Western provinces at 16.3%, while Nova Scotia led the Atlantic provinces with growth of 11.0%.
Preliminary data for February indicate new vehicles sales decreased 7% month-over-month.
