Asian markets were broadly lower Monday as Hong Kong stocks slipped from a record high and Australian stocks dropped on the back of declines for mining giants BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. Japanese markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.
In Tokyo, markets were closed while in Hong Kong, the blue chip Hang Seng Index dropped 145.35 points, or 0.63 percent, to 22,953.94.
Among gainers -- shares of China Coal Energy Co. rose 2.7% after it announced a plan to sell up to 1.53 billion A shares in Shanghai.
Shares of Chinese conglomerate Fosun International ended at HK$10.34, up from its initial public offering at HK$9.23. More than 487 million shares exchanged hands.
Shares of China Citic Bank Corp. rose 1.6% after the company announced Monday that its first-half net profit would rise more than 80% from a year ago.

JAKARTA: Indonesia's Jakarta Composite fell 0.3% to 2,295.55.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's KLSE Composite slipped 0.3% at 1,380.57.
SHANGHAI: China's Shanghai Composite lost 2.4% to 3,821.92, after moving between a low of 3,820.57 and a high of 3,931.87 during the session.
TAIPEI: Taiwan's Weighted index dropped 0.6% to 9,417.32.
WELLINGTON: New Zealand's NZX 50 index ended 0.1% lower at 4,240.36.
SYDNEY: The Australian S&P/ASX 200 index, meanwhile, closed 0.1% lower at 6,380.80 after rising to 6,515.10 earlier in the session.
