Hong Kong stocks climbed Monday, in line with the direction of U.S. stock futures after former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers withdrew from consideration to become the next Federal Reserve chairman.
Japanese markets were closed for a holiday
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gained 337.13 points, or 1.5%, to 23,252.41
Gainers included HSBC Holdings PLC as the financial-sector heavyweight's shares rose 1.9%, and China Construction Bank Corp. as it picked up 1.6%.
Also higher were shares of Tencent Holdings Ltd., up by 1.5% after the Internet company applied for a private banking license, according to reports Friday.
CHINA
The Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 dropped 10.51 points, or 0.4%, to 2,478.39
China Petroleum & Chemical Corp., or Sinopec, tacked on 1%, with the Chinese government planning to invest 80 billion yuan ($13.07 billion U.S.) this year in oil and gas exploration efforts, according to state media Sunday.

The Taiex Index in Taiwan leaped 112.86 points, or 1.4%, to 8,255.34
Korea’s Kospi Index recovered 19.05 points, or 1%, to 2,013.37
The Singapore Straits Times Index took on 59.18 points, or 1.9%, to 3,179.48
In New Zealand, the Exchange 50 Gross Index added 42.68 points, or 0.9%, to 4,693.63
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 tacked on 28.36 points, or 0.5%, to 5,247.99
