Asia rises as China bank chips in


Most Asian stocks rose as the Bank of Japan started a two-day policy meeting and China’s money-market rates dropped after the central bank pumped funds into the financial system.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index rebuilt 154.28 points, or 1%, to 15,795.96.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index regained 104.17 points, or 0.5%, to 23,033.12.

Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., the nation’s biggest lender, climbed 2.7% in Hong Kong. LG Display, a supplier of panels for Apple Inc. devices, rose 2.3% in Seoul after Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch raised its rating on the stock.

Fortescue Metals Group Ltd., Australia’s third-largest iron-ore miner, sank 4.6% in Sydney after a benchmark for the metal’s price fell in China, the biggest consumer of the commodity.

Chinese lenders advanced in Hong Kong. ICBC climbed 2.7%. China Construction Bank Corp., the nation’s second-biggest lender, increased 3%. Agricultural Bank of China rose 2.1%

China stocks rose, spurring the benchmark index’s biggest gains in a week, after the central bank eased the cash shortage in the financial system and phone-equipment maker ZTE Corp. returned to profit.

Shanghai’s CSI 300 index picked up 21.42 points, or 1%, to 2,187.41

Shanghai Pudong Development Bank Co. climbed 1% after the People’s Bank of China expanded a lending facility to include smaller lenders. Haitong Securities Co. jumped the most in seven weeks on speculation initial public offerings will boost profits.

Zhejiang Wolwo Bio-Pharmaceutical Co. soared in its debut in Shenzhen as seven out of eight companies that began trading today rallied 45%. ZTE, the second-biggest phone-equipment maker, rose the most in almost three weeks.

China Citic Bank Corp. added 0.8%. Haitong Securities, the second-biggest listed brokerage, rose 2.5%. Founder Securities Co. jumped 4.7%.

In other markets;

Korea’s Kospi index moved ahead 10.11 points, or 0.5%, to 1,963.89

Taiwan’s Taiex Index erased 21.66 points, or 0.3%, to 8,599.90

The Singapore Straits Times Index prospered 4.97 points, or 0.2%, to 3,133.76

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 progressed 31.18 points, or 0.6%, to 4,921.67

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 gained 36.42 points, or 0.7%, to 5,331.46
