Big drop for Nikkei


Japan stocks fell the most in a month on Monday, after revised figures showed the nation’s economy grew slower than previously estimated in the fourth quarter of last year.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index jumped fell back 180.45 points, or 1%, to 18,790.55, its biggest daily percentage drop in more than a month

The yen remained weak, with the dollar trading at ¥120.84. Still, the greenback was off the four-month high of ¥121.27 hit after Friday’s strong U.S. jobs report.

The Hang Seng Index dipped 40.95 points, or 0.2%, to 24,123.05, extending a five-day losing streak

Japan revised down its gross domestic product growth to an annualized 1.5% in the October-December quarter, compared with a preliminary reading of 2.2% increase, data showed on Monday.

In other markets

The Shanghai CSI 300 progressed 59.23 points, or 1.7%, to 3,537.75

The Taiex index in Taiwan dropped 82.79 points, or 0.9%, to 9,562.98

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index shed 12.94 points, or 0.4%, to 3,404.57

The Kospi index in Korea slid 20.12 points, or 1%, to 1,992.82

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 fell 6.11 points, or 0.1%, to 5,896.96

The S&P/ASX index retreated 77.51 points, or 1.3%, to 5,821.35
