Asian stock markets mostly moved lower Monday, though Shanghai rose after stumbling badly last week.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index gained 6.72 points to 20,569.87, rising for a 12th day in a row. On Monday, the yen continued to fall against the U.S. dollar, which was last at ¥124.26, compared with ¥124.14 Friday.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index sprang up 172.97, or 0.6%, to 27,597.16,
CHINA
The Shanghai CSI 300 leaped 235.54 points, or 4.9%, to 5,076.37
The final HSBC China Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index for May was released Monday with a figure of 49.2, beating a preliminary reading of 49.1 and rising from 48.9 in April. Still, a figure below 50 indicates contraction in activity.
In other markets
In Korea, the Kospi index docked 12.43 points, or 0.6%, to 2,102.37
In Taiwan, the Taiex subtracted 75.38 points, or 0.8%, to 9,625.69
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 moved lower 41.76 points, or 0.7%, to 5,735.46
Markets in Singapore and New Zealand were shut down for holiday
