Australia saw its trade deficit narrow to A$2.4 billion ($1.84 billion U.S.) in July, with the value of exports rising 3% and imports remaining unchanged. The deficit figure was lower than analysts' expectations of A$2.7 billion ($2.07 billion U.S.)
The Beige Book, a key indicator of the U.S. economic health and closely watched by the Federal Reserve, showed moderate wage growth in coming months. Despite the labour market nearing full employment, broad-based wage pressures have so far been slow to pick up. But if wages start to rise, that would push up inflation in the months ahead and likely spur the Fed into action.
