Asian markets edged higher Tuesday, with a rebound in crude oil and gold prices helping lift Nippon Oil Corp. in Tokyo and Cnooc in Hong Kong. Shares in Sydney bounced from a five-day losing streak on bargain buying in financials.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average finished up 0.6% at 12,990.58; in Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 0.4% to 23,901.33, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index ended little changed at 12,665.41.
China's Shanghai Composite rose 1.6% to 3,348.35, after sinking 5.6% in the previous session, while the Shenzhen All share index gained 2% at 1,028.77. Both indexes overcame sharp losses earlier in the session.
In Tokyo, shares of Nippon Oil jumped 3.5%. Among commodity traders, Mitsubishi Corp. gained 2.3% and Marubeni Corp. added 3%. In Hong Kong, shares of Cnooc advanced 3.3% and PetroChina Co. advanced 0.7%, while Oil & Natural Gas Corp. gained 2.8% in Mumbai afternoon trading.

New Zealand's NZX 50 index climbed 0.9% to 3,502.88.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index rose 1.1% to 5,400.
South Korea's Kospi slipped 0.3% to 1,742.17, after rising as high as 1,754.30 earlier.
