Russia Tensions Keep Asia Investors Nervous

Shares in Asia-Pacific were mixed on Tuesday as investors in the region continued to monitor tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index continued its negative trend, falling 214.4 points, or 0.8%, to 26,865.19.

The Japanese yen traded at 115.29 per U.S. dollar, weaker than levels below 115.2 seen against the greenback yesterday.

Japan’s economy expanded 5.4% on an annualized basis in the final quarter of 2021, according to government data released Tuesday. Still, the quarterly annualized gross domestic product growth was below a median market forecast for a 5.8% gain.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index lost 200.86 points, or 0.8%, to 24,355.71.

Global markets have been kept on edge amid fears of a Russian attack on Ukraine, with the U.S. closing its embassy in Kyiv.

The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.7113, struggling to recover after last week’s decline from above $0.72.

In Singapore, the Straits Times index slipped 7.75 points, or 0.2%, to 3,421.70

In Korea, the Kospi index slid 43.23 points, or 1.6%, to 2,704.48.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index lost 313.27 points, or 1.7%, to 17,997.67

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 dumped 223.64 points, or 1.8%, to 11,950.14.

In Australia, the ASX 200 regained 26.64 points, or 0.4%, to 7,243.91.
