Asia Mixed as Australian Inflation Slows

Asia-Pacific markets were mixed as the region digests May inflation figures out of Australia and China releases its industrial profits for May.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 ballooned 655.56 points, or 2%, to 33,193.99.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng gained 23.92 points, or 0.1%, to 19,172.05.

Australian markets climbed, with the index seeing its largest one-day gain since April 11.

The country saw a lower-than-expected weighted inflation rate of 5.6% in May. Economists polled by Reuters expected the country’s inflation rate to ease to 6.1%, compared with the 6.8% recorded in April.

CHINA

Mainland Chinese markets were in negative territory as China’s industrial profits sank 18.8% in first five months of 2023.

The CSI 300 recovered backpedaled 4.63 points, or 0.1%, to 3,840.80.

In other markets

In Korea, the Kospi Index lost 17.2 points, or 0.7%, to 2,564.19.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index regained 47.73 points, or 0.3%, to 16,935.63.

In Singapore, the Straits Times index nicked ahead 1.93 points, or 0.1%, to 3,207.28.

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 added 84.26 points, or 0.7%, to 11,733.46.

In Australia, ASX 200 advanced 78.33 points, or 1.1%, to 7,196.54.
