Japan's blue-chip average notched its first positive finish in six sessions Tuesday, and regional bourses ended broadly higher, as investors snapped up shares of Softbank Corp., Sony Corp. and others that were battered by last week's upheaval.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index rose 202.25 points, or 1.22 percent, to finish at 16,844.50 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 393.68 points to 19,058.56.

In China -- shares in Shanghai, the epicenter of last week's market meltdown, rebounded Tuesday, with the key Composite Index gaining nearly 2 percent on strong buying of banks and other financial shares.

The Shanghai Composite Index closed at 2,840.18, up 1.97 percent, after rising as much as 2.6 percent during the session.

Elsewhere:

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index rose 20.27 points to 1,130.96, a day after falling 4.6 percent. The market had tumbled more than 10 percent since Feb. 27.

MANILA: The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index fell 24.61 points, or 0.8 percent, at 2,973.27. Since Friday, the index has lost 6.8 percent.

SEOUL: The Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 26.78 points, or 2 percent, to 1,402.93.

SINGAPORE: The benchmark Straits Times Index gained 54.23 points, or 1.8 percent, crossing the psychological 3,000-point level to finish at 3,036.52.

WELLINGTON: The benchmark NZX-50 index slipped 1.97 points to 4,033.36.
