Asian shares traded higher Tuesday, though with most indexes off their highs of the morning after sharp overnight gains in U.S. equities.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index added 123.70 points, or 1.3%, to 9,694.01
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index picked up 44.87 points, or 0.2%, to 21,457.66
Elpida Memory Inc. was down 1% after having risen 2.2% in early trading. But Japanese financials remained strong after positive earnings news from some European peers, with Mizuho Financial Group Inc. 2.1% higher and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. up 1%.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index got a boost from index heavyweight HSBC Holdings PLC , which was up 1.8% after reporting a doubling of its first-half profit.

Shanghai’s CSI 300 Index fell back 51.30 points, or 1.8%, to 2,865.97
Singapore’s Straits Times Index slid 10.27 points, or 0.3%, to 3,014.77
Korea’s Kospi index moved 8.33 points, or 0.5%, higher to 1,790.60
Taiwan’s Taiex Index gathered 45.85 points, or 0.6%, to 7,957.53
New Zealand’s NZX index prospered 6.21 points, or 0.2%, to 3,050.38
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 30 points, or 0.7%, to 4,571.08
