Nikkei Takes Day Off; Asian Markets End Mixed

World Markets were mixed in yesterday's trading as the Nikkei was closed for holiday and most Asian markets will be closed at various times throughout the week for holidays. There is clear uncertainty about the global economic recovery, spurred by weak U.S. consumer sentiment data on Friday and as oil attempts to stabilize after last week's drop. Gold continues to soar as it hit $1,283.25 an ounce, surpassing the previous all-time peak of $1,282.75 struck on Friday as investors apparently are still concerned about the economy and see still see it as a safe haven.

China shares ended at their lowest level in more than five weeks Monday, decreasing on the fact of concerns Beijing will take use tactics to tighten lending in the banking sector. China's Shanghai Composite Index slid .38 percent to 2,588.71. Chinese-traded banks were mixed.

Shanghai-listed shares of Bank of Communications rose 1.6%, while Bank of China fell 0.3%. ICBC was up 0.3% and Agricultural Bank of China ended unchange after several down days.

Elsewhere:

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose .03% to 21977.34.

South Korea's Kospi increased .29% to 1,832.63.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed down .164% to 4,631.300.

India’s Sensex gained .1.59%.

Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Composite Index rose 2.72 points to 1,469.69.

Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index lost .40%.

Shenzhen Composite fell 1.129% to 1,198.016.

Taiwan's Taiex was up .35%.

Singapore's Straits Times Index was up .15%.

New Zealand's NZX-50 up .15%.

Philippine shares were up 1.859%.

Shares in Thailand lost .055%.
