U.S. Consumer Confidence Sags in Early October

Consumers south of the border felt as though their economy will continue to expand but at a moderate pace.

Figures released by the Conference Board on Tuesday showed U.S. Consumer Confidence Index hit 98.6 in October, down from 104.1 in September

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected the index to hit 101.5 in October.

The survey, a closely followed barometer of consumer attitudes, measures confidence toward business conditions, short-term outlook, personal finances and jobs.

Americans saying business conditions were "good" decreased by more than two percentage points to 26.2%. Those saying conditions were "bad" increased by nearly two points to 17.7%. And people saying jobs were "plentiful" was decreased to 24.3% from 27.6% last month.
