China has now administered a total of 149 million COVID-19 vaccines, according to data released by the country’s National Health Commission.
China is deploying a number of tactics to achieve its goal of vaccinating 560 million people, or 40% of its population, by the end of June.
In Beijing, vaccinated people qualify for buy-one-get-one-free ice cream cones, while in the southern town of Wancheng, government officials have warned parents that if they refused to get vaccinated, their children’s schooling and future employment were at risk.
Over the past week, China has administered an average of five million COVID-19 inoculations a day, up from about one million a day for most of March. Experts have said that they hope to reach 10 million vaccinations a day by the end of April to meet the June goal.
To date, China has administered 10 shots for every 100 residents while the United Kingdom has administered 56 for every 100 of its citizens, and the United States is at 50 vaccines per 100 people.
