Despite negative reviews, new Marvel movie "Eternals" grossed $71 million U.S. in ticket sales during its domestic debut, the fourth-highest opening of any movie released since the global pandemic began.
Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Marvel now holds three of the four top pandemic opening weekends domestically.
"Eternals" was praised for its diverse characters, but its inclusivity wasn’t enough to counter an overstuffed plot and limited character development, critics said in their reviews.
Globally, "Eternals" grossed $161.7 million U.S. in its opening weekend, the second-highest global haul posted by a film in 2021, just behind Universals’ movie "F9," the latest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise.
"Eternals" opened in key markets such as the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Korea and Australia, but has yet to garner a release date in China — one of the highest-grossing international box offices.
