U.S. consumer confidence index declined 5.7 points to 47.7 in October, the Conference Board Consumer Research Center reported Tuesday.
The present situation and expectations index both decreased to 20.7 and 65.7 from 23.0 and 73.8, respectively.
The consumer confidence monthly survey retreated from September’s revised figure of 53.4, as consumers continued to rate current conditions unfavorably in October. Data was much weaker than expected as analysts estimated the figure to rise to 53.7.
