Futures Trail off Ahead of OPEC Meeting

Canadian Western, NFI in Focus


Futures tracking Canada's energy-heavy main stock index edged lower on Monday as oil prices fell from a four-week high and focus turned to a meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The TSX Composite Index advanced 140.49 points to conclude Friday at 20,644.64, for a gain on the week of 305 points, or 1.5%.

The Canadian dollar gained 0.3 cents to 79.32 cents U.S.

September futures stumbled 0.1% Monday.

Private equity firm Centerbridge Partners and Canadian pension fund Caisse de dépôt et placement du Quebec (CPDQ) are nearing a deal to buy TPG-backed Medical Solutions for about $2.3 billion including debt.

CIBC raised the price target on Canadian Western Bank to $44.00 from $42.00

RBC raised the target price on H&R REIT to $19.00 from $18.00

CIBC cut the rating on NFI Group to neutral from outperform.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange improved 15.88 points, or 1.8%, Friday to 891.45, for a weekly gain of nearly 27 points, or 3.1%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock futures were quiet on Monday morning as investors readied for the final trading days of August.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials tacked on 20 points to 35,423.

Futures for the S&P 500 inched up four points, or 0.1%, to 4,509.50.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite Index prospered 14.75 points, or 0.1%, to 15,441.

Monday and Tuesday mark the last two trading days of August. Thus far, the S&P 500 is up 2.6% in August. The Dow added 1.5% and the NASDAQ rose 3.1% this month.

Key technology shares were higher in pre-market trading. Chipmakers AMD and Nvidia moved higher, while Microsoft also rose.

Shares of Affirm Holdings were up 40% in pre-market trading after the buy now, pay later company announced a partnership with Amazon on Friday. Amazon’s stock rose 1%.

Oil futures were lower and gasoline futures were higher slightly in a minimal reaction to Hurricane Ida making landfall over the weekend.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 index gained 0.5% Monday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index also advanced 0.5%. .

Oil prices eked up three cents to $68.77 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices dropped $1.10 to $1,818.40 U.S. a pound.
