Futures Demur Before Powell Speech

Futures for Canada's main stock index slipped on Friday tracking bullion prices, as investors awaited the U.S. central bank chief's speech for clues on the path and pace of future interest rate hikes.

The TSX gained 150.96 points to close Thursday at 20,172.34.

Canadian software company OpenText agreed to buy enterprise software maker Micro Focus, in an all-cash deal valuing the British company at $6 billion including debt.

The TSX Venture Exchange tacked on 1.65 points to finish Thursday at 661.26.

ON WALLSTREET

Stock futures dipped Friday as investors awaited Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials fell 41 points, or 0.1%, early Friday to 32,227.

Futures for the S&P 500 dipped 10.75 points, or 0.3%, to 4,190.25

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite slipped 46.5 points, or 0.4%, to 13,109.56.

Nevertheless, all the major averages are on pace for their second straight down week. The Dow is on track for a 1.2% decline. The S&P 500 is set to dive 0.7%, and NASDAQ is poised for a decline of 0.5%.

All eyes are on Powell’s widely anticipated 10 a.m. ET speech at the central bank’s annual symposium in Wyoming.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index gained 0.6% Friday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index shot higher 1%,

Oil prices gained $1.10 to $93.62 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices dulled $14.40 to $1,757.00 U.S. an ounce.
