Futures Promise Solid Start to Trading Day

HEXO, Teck in Focus

Futures for stocks in Canada’s largest centre gained on Tuesday, tracking strength in gold prices, while investors await the Bank of Canada's rate decision due Wednesday.

The TSX gained 79.13 points by close Monday to 20,275.82.

June futures on the S&P/TSX index were better by 0.2% Tuesday morning.

The Canadian dollar slid 0.03 cents to 74.02 cents U.S.

In company news, U.S.-listed shares of HEXO fell 20% in pre-market trading, after Tilray Brands said it would buy the Canadian cannabis company for $56 million.

Glencore CEO Gary Nagle plans to meet with some Canadian shareholders of Teck Resources in Toronto on Thursday, to personally lobby them for support of Glencore's proposed takeover of the copper and zinc miner, Reuters reported.

French asset manager AXA IM said it has agreed to sell its stake in French data centre firm Data4 to Brookfield Infrastructure for an undisclosed amount.

The TSX Venture Exchange regained 0.73 points Monday to 626.58.

ON WALLSTREET

S&P 500 futures were flat Tuesday as investors look toward the release of economic data later this week.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 14 points at 33,765.

Futures for the S&P 500 eked up 1.75 points to 4,138.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite faded 21.75 points, or 0.2%, to 13,136.50.

Investors seemed to be preparing for the March readings of the consumer price index, due Wednesday, and the producer price index, out Thursday. Both inflation metrics could give further insight into how the Federal Reserve might proceed on its rate-hiking campaign.

In other economic releases, the National Federation of Independent Business will be issuing the latest results of its small business index before the market opens.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 1.1% Tuesday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng advanced 0.8%.

Oil prices sank 22 cents to $79.52 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices advanced $12.40 to $2,016.20 U.S. an ounce.
