Futures Just Clear Breakeven

Barrick, Teck in Focus

Futures for Canada's main stock index edged up on Thursday as Wall Street futures held on to their gains following signs of cooling U.S. inflation, while higher gold prices also supported the mood.

The TSX was up 32.47 points, to close Wednesday at 20,454.32.

June futures on the S&P/TSX index eked up 0.1% Thursday morning.

The Canadian dollar hiked 0.28 cents to 74.68 cents U.S.

In company news, several Teck Resources shareholders called for Glencore Plc to sweeten its takeover bid for the copper-and-zinc miner, saying the offer is still not high enough for them to oppose Teck's own restructuring plan.

Barrick Gold said on Thursday its first-quarter gold production fell 15% sequentially, hurt by lower output at its Carlin mine.

Corus Entertainment reported a loss of eight cents/share in its second-quarter results due to drop in advertising revenue.

The TSX Venture Exchange regrouped 1.92 points Wednesday to 635.88.

ON WALLSTREET

S&P 500 futures rose slightly Thursday, as investors weighed recession risk following the latest meeting minutes from the Federal Reserve.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials inched up four points at 33,817.

Futures for the much-broader index gained 4.25 points, or 0.1%, to 4,123.25.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite picked up 35 points, or 0.3%, to 12,987.25.

Investors will now turn their attention to wholesale inflation data, with the producer price index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics due out at 8:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. Weekly jobless claims are also due at that time. Wall Street is also eyeing the beginning of major corporate earnings on Friday, with commercial banks including JPMorgan and Citigroup as well as firms like BlackRock reporting.

Shares of Delta Air Lines soared nearly 5% in the pre-market after the airline forecast revenue growth and profits for the second quarter that topped analysts estimates.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 0.3% Thursday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng inched up 0.2%.

Oil prices slid 45 cents to $82.81 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices jumped $15.90 to $2,040.80 U.S. an ounce.
