Futures Flat Monday

Canopy, Converge out of TSX

Futures for Canada's resource-heavy stock index were subdued on Monday, tracking declines in oil and gold prices, with investors awaiting critical domestic economic data and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's testimony this week.

The TSX fell by the end of Friday afternoon 51.98 points to 19,975.37; on the week, though, the index gained 83.31 points, or 0.4%.

Futures on the S&P/TSX index were little changed Monday morning.

The Canadian dollar eked up 0.04 cents to 75.78 cents U.S.

On the companies front, cannabis and consumer packaged goods firm Canopy Growth, along with Converge Technology Solutions and support services provider RB Global will be excluded from the benchmark TSX effective Monday.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 lost 1% Monday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index docked 0.6%.

Oil prices progressed 19 cents to $71.97 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices sank $9.70 to $1,961.50. U.S. an ounce.

On the economic beat, Statistics Canada reports the Industrial Product Price Index fell 1.0% month over month in May and was 6.3% lower than in May 2022. In May 2023, the Raw Materials Price Index decreased 4.9% on a monthly basis and fell 18.4% year over year.

The TSX Venture Exchange nicked higher 1.39 points to 613.57, for a gain on the week of 3.25 points, or 0.53%.
