Futures Improve Tuesday

Manulife, Oracle in Focus

Futures tied to Canada's resources-heavy main stock index were marginally higher on Tuesday, tracking a rise in metal prices, while investors awaited the latest U.S. inflation data to gauge the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory.

The TSX Composite was in the minus category 13.18 points to wind up Monday to 20,318.36.

December futures pointed upward 0.2% early Tuesday.

The Canadian dollar was up 0.08 cents to 73.71 cents U.S.

Among individual stocks to look out for, RBC upgraded Manulife Financial to "outperform" from "sector perform".

J.P.Morgan upgraded Stelco Holdings to "overweight" from "neutral".

Rogers Communications said it has sold all of its shares in Cogeco and Cogeco Communications to Canada's second-largest pension fund Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) in a private deal for $829 million.

The TSX Venture Exchange retreated 7.27 points, or 1.4%, Monday to 530.23.

ON WALLSTREET

Stock futures rose slightly Tuesday as Wall Street looks to see if the market rally can power through another round of inflation data.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials sank 72 points, or 0.2%, to 36,878.

Futures for the S&P 500 took on 5.5 points, or 0.1%, at 4,684.

Futures for the NASDAQ hiked 43.75 points, or 0.3%, to 16,493.75.

Shares of tech giant Oracle were down 7% in extended trading after the company’s revenue for the fiscal second quarter missed Wall Street expectations.

The November consumer price index report is slated for release at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect prices were flat month over month. Year over year, CPI is expected to have risen 3.1%.

The report comes as investors try to end a strong year on a high note. The Dow, S&P 500 and NASDAQ are all riding three-day winning streaks and have six consecutive weeks of gains.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 picked up 0.2% Tuesday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index picked up 1.1%.

Oil prices dipped 53 cents to $70.79 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices surged $10.80 to $2,004.50 U.S. an ounce.
