Look for TSX to open strong

CP, RIM in focus

The vibes were good on Bay Street this morning, suggesting Toronto stocks could gain during the trading session.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index squeezed 10.40 points higher to end Friday at 11,576.47.

Among stocks to watch this morning: Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. The federal government has been facing pressure from industries across the country to intervene in the company’s labour dispute.

Elsewhere, shares of Research In Motion could be volatile today. The Globe and Mail reports that the company is close to announcing another round of major job cuts.

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 26.80 points to 1,309.27, while the Nasdaq Canada forged ahead 3.62 points to 365.49.

The Canadian dollar traded this morning up 0.20 cents to 97.62 cents U.S.


ON WALLSTREET

U.S. markets are closed for the Memorial Day holiday

Overseas, almost all major market indices have risen, after six opinion polls taken in the run-up to Greece’s general election next month show voter support increasing for the New Democracy party. The party advocates cutting spending and raising taxes to get the country’s debt crisis under control. The polling results have many investors now thinking that Greek voters are beginning to understand the stark reality of what an exit from the euro-zone would mean for the country.

However, as a ray of hope shone on Greece, Spain is bringing new concerns to the global market. Shares of Bankia SA are down 13% after the Spanish bank said it would need to ask the government for a bailout of €19 billion, far more than had been expected.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was up 0.5%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index up 0.2%

London’s FTSE 100 index gained 0.9%. France’s CAC 40 index climbed 0.9%. Germany’s DAX index picked up 0.6%.

Gold for June delivery gained 0.5% at $1,581.12 U.S. an ounce
