Slight stumble at outset

Enbridge, First Quantum


Canada's main stock index lost some territory, as investors await a slew of Chinese economic data later in the week.

The S&P/TSX composite index dropped 30.54 points to begin Tuesday’s session at 12,423.39

The Canadian dollar ended Monday’s session at 99.32 cents U.S.

Husky Energy Inc reported a 9% drop in first-quarter profit due to lower crude prices. Shares in Husky took on 69 cents to $29.92.

Enbridge Inc said it would expand its 180,000 barrel per day Southern Lights pipeline after customers looked for more space on the line than it could handle. Enbridge shares grew 12 cents to $47.42.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. reported a rise in adjusted earnings, helped by higher sales volumes and its recent acquisition of Inmet Mining Corp. First Quantum shares backtracked three cents to $17.59

Moreover, the country’s aviation regulator has allowed WestJet Airlines Ltd. an exemption from current rules so that it can boost the number of passengers each of its flight attendants may serve to 50 from 40. WestJet shares were grounded 21 cents to $24.72.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 5.09 points to begin Tuesday’s session at 962.29

Nine of the 14 Toronto subgroups were higher in the day’s first hour, led by consumer discretionary stocks, up 0.7%, financial, up 0.6%, and energy, advancing 0.5%.

Gold weighed most on the five laggards, sinking 2.4%, while materials gave up 1.2%, and information technology slid 1.1%.

ON WALLSTREET

Investors pushed the S&P 500 to a new record high in early trading.

The Dow Jones Industrials gained 40.24 points, to begin Tuesday at 15,009.10

The S&P 500 index moved higher 4.44 to 1,621.94 – above Tuesday’s all-time high close -- while the NASDAQ Composite gained 7.60 points to 3,400.56

Shares of DirecTV popped after the company reported better-than-expected earnings.

Molson Coors Brewing, meanwhile, reported sales and profits that fell short of forecasts.

OfficeMax widely missed earnings forecasts and said revenue this year would come in below analysts' estimates. At the same time, the office supply company issued a special dividend of $1.50 U.S. a share.

Also, Walt Disney Company, which reports earnings after the close, inked a deal with Electronic Arts to co-develop Star Wars video games.

Whole Foods and Kraft spinoff Mondelez are among the other companies set to report results after the market close.

Prices on the 10-year U.S. Treasury fell a bit, raising yields to 1.78% from Monday’s 1.77%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions

Oil prices sank 48 cents to $95.68 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices moved lower by $20.00 at $1,448 U.S. an ounce
