Lower open forecast for Tuesday

Futures on equity markets in Toronto pointed to a lower open on Tuesday as investors weighed up tensions between Russia and Ukraine and signs of slowing growth in China.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed out Monday up 26.74 points to 14,284.43, with futures off 0.05% Tuesday.

The Canadian dollar faded 0.34 cents to 90.88 cents U.S. early Tuesday

Canada Revenue Agency said on Monday that the private information of about 900 people had been compromised as hackers exploited the "Heartbleed" bug, and security experts warned that more attacks will likely follow.

Greece's bank bailout fund has received bids from anchor investors, including Canada's Fairfax and York Capital, for a big chunk of Eurobank's 2.86-billion-euro ($3.95 billion U.S.) share offering, two senior banking sources close to the talks said.

Canadian private equity firm Onex Corp and entertainment company Cineplex Inc have together emerged as the leading contender to buy restaurant and arcade chain Dave & Buster's Inc, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

On the economic schedule, Statistics Canada reported that manufacturing sales leaped 1.4% in February to $51.2 billion, the highest since July 2008, the peak that was reached before the last recession began.

The Canadian Real Estate Association was expected to release national home sale activity for March this morning.

Stock index futures edged up on Tuesday after earnings from Coca Cola and Johnson & Johnson and ahead of economic data including inflation and manufacturing.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials dipped 16 points, or 0.1%, to 16,080. Futures for the S&P 500 gained 5.5 points, or 0.3%, to 1,830, and futures for the NASDAQ surged 11.5 points, or 0.3%, to 3,481.75.

Coca-Cola Co reported an 8% fall in quarterly net earnings after a decline in volumes in Europe and the sale of its bottling operations in Brazil, but global sales volumes rose 2% in the quarter. Shares rose 1.2% pre-market.

Johnson & Johnson shares also rose 1.9% in pre-market trading after results.

Herbalife was hit with a shareholder class action lawsuit accusing the multilevel-marketing company of failing to disclose to investors that its operations were based on a pyramid scheme.

Shares of Morgan Stanley gained 2.9% in pre-market trading after Bank of America / Merrill Lynch raised its rating on the stock to "buy" from "neutral."

Yahoo shares rose 1.7% in pre-market trading after Macquarie raised the stock to "outperform" from "neutral" and raised its target price to $40 from $37.50 U.S.

Oil prices fell 99 cents to $103.06 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slipped $24.70 to $1,302.90 U.S. an ounce.
