Futures indicate flat start

Futures hinted at stock markets in Canada opening little changed.

The S&P/TSX composite index ballooned 120.88 points to close at 14,654.94, but Tuesday futures were down 0.04%.

The Canadian dollar retreated 0.03 cents to 91.75 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Encana Corp , Canada's largest natural-gas producer, said first-quarter operating profit more than doubled, helped by higher gas prices and liquids production.

BlackBerry launched a low-cost touchscreen device in Jakarta, the Z3, as the embattled smartphone maker looks to revive sales in emerging markets like Indonesia where its once-fervent following has shriveled.

U.S. Senate Republicans on Monday blocked an energy-efficiency bill backed by manufacturers and environmentalists, forfeiting a chance to vote on TransCanada Corp's long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline.

U.S. stock futures were inching up Tuesday

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials picked up 33 points, or 0.2%, to 16,688. Futures for the S&P 500 inched up 3.5 points, or 0.2%, at 1,896.30, and futures for the NASDAQ gained 9.75 points, or 0.3%, to 3,617.50

The Dow and the S&P 500 closed at record highs Monday, and the NASDAQ climbed by about 1.8%.

It's expected to be a relatively quiet day on the earnings front. Fossil will report earnings after the closing bell. Big retailers such as Wal-Mart and Macy's will be reporting later in the week.

Shares of DirecTV were surging by roughly 5% in pre-market trading on reports that AT&T may make a bid to buy the company.

Shares in Airbus were rising by 5% in Europe after the firm reported better-than-expected quarterly results.

Investors will also be focusing on developments in the pharmaceutical industry Tuesday. The American drug maker Pfizer wants to buy
Britain's AstraZeneca and both CEOs will appear before a U.K. parliamentary committee to answer questions about the potential takeover.

Meanwhile, economic releases could affect investor sentiment. The U.S. Census Bureau will report April retail sales this morning. At the same time, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release import and export price data.

Most other regional markets ended with gains. The Nikkei 225 in Japan jumped by 2%.

All European markets were rising in morning trading. Germany's DAX index was making the biggest advance, up by 0.8%

Oil prices gained 65 cents to $101.24 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices dipped $3.40 to $1,292.40 U.S. an ounce.
