TSX to step back from highs

Canadian stocks looked set to open lower on Tuesday after the TSX index scaled six-year highs in the previous sessions.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 32.31 points to end Monday at 14,871.21. Futures were off 0.1%

The Canadian dollar erased 0.04 cents at 91.66 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Canadian employers are looking to hire at a modestly improved pace in the third quarter, suggesting growth in the labor market will continue to plod along, according to a survey by ManpowerGroup Inc.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers cut its 2030 Canadian oil production forecast on Monday, citing growing uncertainty over the timing of development of some oil sands projects due to rising costs and lack of available capital.

An eerie calm may be settling over markets but there's plenty to keep investors on their toes Tuesday.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials slid 23 points, or 0.1%, to 16,913. Futures for the S&P 500 docked four points, or 0.2%, to 1,946.25, and futures for the NASDAQ dropped 7.25 points, or 0.2%, to 3,786.50.

Shares in eBay fell in extended trading after it said that the head of its PayPal division, David Marcus, was leaving for Facebook. Earlier Monday, Amazon launched a new service that's expected to go head-to-head with PayPal. It will allow customers to automatically pay recurring charges, such as phone bills, with their Amazon accounts.

Shares in Apple were still seeing support in pre-market trading after the company had a seven-for-one stock split Monday that made the shares easier for small investors to purchase because of their lower face value.

Shares in Netflix were higher pre-market after the company was reported to have buried the hatchet with Internet providers such as Verizon over slow streaming video.

General Motors shares may also move depending on developments at the automaker's shareholder meeting.

Tesla, a notoriously volatile stock, may be worth watching as the company's founder and CEO Elon Musk holds a SpaceX event near Washington.

Meanwhile, Burlington Stores announced a gain in net income for the quarter, compared to a year-earlier loss. But going forward, the clothing retailer projected a loss per share in the upcoming quarter.

RadioShack reported a decline in sales and a worsening loss, compared to the year-earlier quarter. Their loss was nearly twice as big as forecast.

European markets were mixed in morning trading.

Asian markets also ended mixed. Markets in China jumped while the Nikkei 225 in Japan declined by nearly 1%.

Oil prices gained 0.3% to $104.72 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices inched up 0.1%, to $1,255.30 U.S. an ounce.
