Futures show lower start to week

Canadian stocks looked set to start the week lower

The S&P/TSX composite index remained positive 7.85 points Friday to end a short week at 15,214.96, with June futures down 0.1%

The Canadian dollar nicked up 0.04 cents to 93.95 cents U.S. early Monday

A Federal Court judge on Friday invalidated the Conservative government's decision to limit health coverage for many people in the country making refugee claims, declaring the federal action to have been shocking and outrageous.

A Canadian National Railway train carrying crude oil derailed near Whitecourt, Alberta, early on Friday morning, the company said, but there were no injuries or fire and the crude cars were intact.

Sherritt International Corp is among the six companies doing due diligence on BHP Billiton's Australian nickel unit Nickel West, which could be worth as much as A$800 million, the Australian Financial Review reported on Sunday.

Raymond James raised the price target on Suncor Energy to $55 from $51, with an outperform rating.

On the economic front, Statistics Canada reported that municipalities issued building permits worth $6.9 billion in May, up 13.8% from April. This followed a 2.2% rise in the previous month.

The increase in May resulted primarily from higher construction intentions for commercial buildings in Ontario and Manitoba, as well as multi-family dwellings in British Columbia.

Later this morning, Western University’s Ivey School of Business will come out with its Purchasing Managers Index for June.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock futures were slightly lower ahead of the opening bell, raising questions over a possible retreat as investors consider the implications of new record highs.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials fell 16 points, or 0.1%, to 16,960. Futures for the S&P 500 dropped 4.9 points, or 0.3%, to 1,972.70, and futures for the NASDAQ dipped 10 points, or 0.3%, to 3,908.

PetSmart shares could be hot again on Monday after activist investor Jana Partners disclosed a 10% stake in the company and said it would pursue strategic changes -- including a possible sale.

GoPro shares were higher in pre-market trading -- another sign that the camera company might be investors' favorite new momentum play.

European markets were lower in early trading, with major indices posting declines of less than 1%.

Asian markets ended mixed, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Tokyo's Nikkei both finishing in the negative territory.

Oil prices gave back 16 cents to $103.90 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices faltered $5.90 to $1,314.70 U.S. an ounce.
