TSX to start higher as tensions ease

Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's stock market as traders saw hopes of easing of tensions between Russia and the West after rebels in Ukraine handed over the black box recorder from Malaysia flight 17 to Malaysian authorities.

The S&P/TSX composite index dropped 16.58 points to close Monday at 15,249.99, with Tuesday futures up 0.1%.

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.13 cents to 93 cents U.S. early Tuesday

The stock index took a step back from last week's all-time high on Monday, as a 3% jump in Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc was more than offset by declines across most major industries.

Canadian National Railway Co, the country's largest rail operator, reported a big spike in profit as it moved record volumes of goods and made a swift recovery from last quarter's brutal winter weather.

Worried they may be given the cold shoulder by an imperious leadership, shareholders of Barrick Gold Corp, the world's biggest gold miner, are skeptical over the company's latest management shakeup.

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 5.80 points Monday to 1,006.44.

Stock markets were looking ready to perk Tuesday morning, with easing tension over Ukraine and healthy company earnings giving investors some extra energy.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gains 47 points, or 0.3%, to 17.030. Futures for the S&P 500 hiked 7.25 points, or 0.4%, to 1,973.50, and futures for the NASDAQ tacked on 17.25 points, or 0.4%, to 3,943.

Shares in Chipotle were surging by roughly 10% in pre-market trading after the fast-food chain posted earnings that beat expectations.

Shares in Netflix rose about 1% after the video rental company reported its latest set of quarterly earnings and revealed it now boasts over 50 million members.

Credit Suisse shares were dipping by about 2% in Switzerland after the bank reported a loss in the latest quarter. In May, the bank pleaded guilty to federal charges that it illegally allowed some U.S. clients to evade taxes, leading to a $2.6-billion U.S. settlement.

Coca-Cola, Domino's and McDonald's will report earnings before the opening bell.

Verizon, Comcast and Harley-Davidson all reported boosts in earnings, compared to the year-earlier quarters.

Apple and Microsoft will report after the close.

On the economic front, the U.S. government will report the latest consumer price index number this morning. Stats on existing home sales from June will be reported at 10 a.m.

European markets were all rising by less than 1% in early trading as tensions in Ukraine appeared to ease slightly.

After delays and setbacks, a train carrying the bodies of most of those who died in theMH17 plane crash began moving out of eastern Ukraine.

Still, EU officials are meeting Tuesday to discuss further sanctions against Russia in a bid to end its support for separatist rebels in Ukraine. Western leaders say the bulk of evidence suggests the rebels shot down the Malaysia Airlines plane.

Asian markets were almost uniformly upward.

Oil prices added 35 cents to $104.94 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices dipped $6.40 to $1,307.50 U.S. an ounce.
