Stocks expected to dwindle at open

Futures pointed to a downward opening for the TSX Tuesday.

The S&P/TSX composite index dipped 46.66 points to close Monday at 14,743.12, with futures off 0.3%.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.12 cents to 89.71 cents U.S. early Tuesday, after a climb of nearly a full cent Monday.

Malaysian state-owned energy company Petronas said on Monday it could delay its planned $11 billion liquefied natural gas plant on Canada's Pacific Coast by up to 15 years unless it can reach a favorable tax deal by month's end.

Lundin Mining will buy Freeport-McMoRan's 80% stake in the Candelaria copper mining operation in Chile for at least $1.8 billion, more than doubling its copper output.

CIBC raised the rating on Fortuna Silver Mines to outperform from sector performer

Raymond James raised the rating on Lundin Mining to strong buy from outperform

NBF raised the rating on Postmedia Network to sector perform from underperform.

Economically speaking, Statistics Canada reported this morning that the total value of building permits issued by Canadian municipalities fell 27.3% to $6.7 billion in August, following three months of double-digit increases.

The agency says the August decline was mainly the result of lower construction intentions for non-residential buildings in Quebec and residential buildings in Ontario.

The TSX Venture Exchange surrendered 14.84 points Monday to 867.98.

ON WALLSTREET

Tuesday could prove a downward day on the markets, U.S. stock futures shifting lower and markets across Europe declining.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials docked 31 points, or 0.2%, to 16,872. Futures for the S&P 500 let go of three points, or 0.2%, to 1,953, and futures for the NASDAQ ditched 4.50 points, or 0.1%, to 4,002.50.

Shares in the mining behemothRio Tinto were rising by about 5.5% in London after it revealed that Glencore had approached it about a mega takeover in July. Rio Tinto said it turned down the offer and the firms are no longer discussing the matter.

Watch Amazon trading Tuesday. The company is reportedly set to be investigated by European regulators for striking a sweetheart tax deal in Luxembourg.

Apple is already being investigated for a similar tax arrangement in Ireland.

Shares in The Container Store plunged in extended trading after the company's quarterly earnings report fell short of analysts' expectations.

Investors are feeling disgruntled after new data from Germany -- Europe's largest economy -- showed industrial production took a big hit in August, declining by 4% compared to the previous month. This is the latest in a string of reports showing the German economy is sputtering.

Oil prices dipped 28 cents to $90.06 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slid $1.60 to $1,205.70 U.S. an ounce.
