Stocks to push higher at open

Inflation data rolls in


Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Friday


The S&P/TSX composite index shot higher 183.09 points, or 1.3%, to close Thursday at 14,052.97. Friday’s futures gained 1%.

The Canadian dollar took on 0.11 cents to 88.94 cents U.S. early Friday.

Billionaire investor William Ackman turned up the heat on Allergan Inc. on Thursday when he accused the Botox maker's board of misleading investors to fend off a hostile takeover bid from Valeant Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Cowen raised the rating on Calfrac Well Services to outperform from market perform.

Barclays raised the rating on Laurentian Bank of Canada to equal weight from underweight.

Cowen raised the rating on Trican Well Service to outperform from market perform.

Economically speaking, inflation numbers rolled in for last month. Statistics Canada reported that consumer prices rose 2.0% in the 12 months to September, following a 2.1% increase in August. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the Consumer Price Index increased 0.2% in September, after rising 0.1% in August.

It looks like it's time for a bounce after days of gut-wrenching volatility in the stock market.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials leaped 153 points, or 1%, to 16,168. Futures for the S&P 500 hiked 20.75 points, or 1.1%, to 1,871.25, and futures for the NASDAQ spiked 47.75 points, or 1.3%, to 3,789.25.

Investors are waiting for General Electric, Morgan Stanley and Honeywell to report quarterly earnings before the opening bell.

The U.S. government will post housing start data for September this morning, with the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index out a short time later.

Shares in Google are slipping pre-market after the company's quarterly results showed third-quarter sales came in short of expectations. It also reported another decline in the average amount paid by advertisers when a user clicks on an ad.

Shares in Urban Outfitters are plunging by 13% pre-market after the retailer warned that third quarter earnings will be squeezed.

Rolls-Royce is having a tough day on the London markets. Shares in the aircraft engine-maker are falling by about 8% after the firm warned that market conditions have deteriorated and some big customers are delaying and canceling orders because of Russian trade sanctions.

Shoemaker Jimmy Choo debuted on the London stock market Friday. Shares were relatively flat in early trading. The company picked the ticker symbol "CHOO".

Most European markets were rising by more than 1% in early trading. Over in Asia, the main stock markets were mixed at the close of the week.

Oil prices bounced back $1.02 to $83.72 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices shed a dollar to $1,240.20 U.S. an ounce.
