Futures lower on Ebola concerns

Stock futures pointed to a lower opening for Canada's main stock index on Friday as caution prevailed after the first confirmed case of Ebola in New York City and ahead of European bank stress test results, due at the weekend.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 174.76 points, or 1.2%, to close Thursday at 14,486.83. December futures trailed 0.4%.

The Canadian dollar hiked 0.22 cents to 89.26 cents U.S. early Friday.

Terminal operator Canexus Corp said on Thursday that an unnamed midstream company had cancelled its contract to ship two unit trains per week from Western Canada's first dedicated crude-by-rail facility.

Canada's energy regulator ruled on Thursday that Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP must be allowed access to a park in a Vancouver suburb to complete technical work for the planned $5.4-billion expansion of its Trans Mountain oil pipeline.

Investors are set for a dip at the outset, much of it on the back of Amazon’s misfortunes.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials dipped 39 points, or 0.2%, to 16,574. Futures for the S&P 500 fell 6.5 points, or 0.3%, to 1,939.50, and futures for the NASDAQ subsided 15.25 points, or 0.4%, to 3,990.

Investors are reportedly getting fed up with the constant stream of losses at Amazon Shares in the online retailer fell by about 10% pre-market after the company reported a loss of $437 million U.S. in the last quarter, even though revenue was up 20%.

The flow of quarterly results continues into Friday. Ford, Bristol-Myers, Shire, Colgate-Palmolive and Procter & Gamble are all set to report ahead of the open.

Meanwhile, investors are pushing Microsoft shares up by 3% pre-market in reaction to the company's latest earnings.

The U.S. Census Bureau will release monthly data on new home sales for September.

European markets were all dipping lower in early trading. Asian markets ended mixed. The standout performer was the Nikkei in Japan, which rose by 1% after a volatile week.

Oil prices backtracked 75 cents to $81.34 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices hiked $4.60 to $1,233.70 U.S. an ounce.
