Futures dip to start week

Valeant, Precision in focus

Futures pointed to a sluggish start to the last week of October, with concerns about Europe weighing on investors' minds.

The S&P/TSX composite index moved into the green 56.99 points to end Friday and the week at 14,543.82, with futures off 0.1% Monday.

The Canadian dollar eked higher 0.02 cents to 89 cents U.S. early Monday.

Precision Drilling Corp, Canada's largest oil and natural gas drilling contractor, reported a better-than-expected 79% jump in quarterly profit, helped by higher pricing and drilling activity.

Oil explorer Ophir Energy has agreed to buy interests in seven deepwater production-sharing contracts in Indonesia from Niko Resources, building on Ophir's foray into the south-east Asian market.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc said it is prepared to improve its offer for Allergan Inc to at least $200 per share.

The TSX Venture Exchange dropped 3.15 points Friday to 805.45.

ON WALLSTREET

Futures in New York are skidding after the European Central Bank revealed that 25 financial firms failed an extensive health check.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials fell 25 points, or 0.2%, to 16,711. Futures for the S&P 500 dipped four points, or 0.2%, to 1,955.75, and futures for the NASDAQ dropped three points, or 0.1%, to 4,031.75.

There will be plenty of quarterly results to sort through Monday.

Allergan, Merck and Citizens Financial Group will be reporting earnings before the open.

After the close, we'll hear from Twitter, Buffalo Wild Wings, Crocs and Denny's.

Economically, at 10 a.m. ET, the U.S. government will release data on September pending home sales.

Shares in about a dozen European banks are tanking Monday morning, with Ireland's Permanent TSB bank tumbling by 24% and Italy's Banca Carige falling 18%.

However, shares in the Greek bank Eurobank are rising by about 10%, even though it also failed the tests -- investors were expecting even more dire results for this particular firm.

Most major European markets were declining by about 0.5% in early trading.

Part of the decline was related to a new report out of Germany showing economic conditions in the nation continued to deteriorate in October.

Oil prices slipped 49 cents to $80.52 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices lurched lower $1.30 to $1,230.50 U.S. an ounce.
