Canfor, Canaccord in focus


Stock futures pointed to a lower opening for Canada's main stock index on Monday

The S&P/TSX composite index leaped 154.63 points, or 1.1%, to end the day, week and month at 14,613.32. Monday’s futures trailed 0.1%.

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.01 cents to 88.61 cents U.S. early Monday.

CIBC raises the rating on Canfor Pulp Products to outperform, with a price target of $17.50.

Canaccord Genuity cut the target price on First Quantum Minerals to $24.00 from $27.00, with a buy rating.

National Bank Financial raised the target price on Metro Inc. to $80.00 from $74.00 with an outperform rating.

Canadian banks and credit card companies have reached a deal with the federal government to cut fees charged to retailers for credit transactions and are likely to announce the agreement this week, according to a source familiar with the talks.

It looks like stocks could start the month on the back foot after October's fireworks. U.S. futures are edging lower and there's a lack of direction in the markets.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials dipped 33 points, or 0.2%, to 17,278. Futures for the S&P 500 slid 2.5 points, or 0.1%, to 2,009, and futures for the NASDAQ fell 3.25 points, or 0.1%, to 4,147.25.

October was an explosive month, ending with a bang on Friday. The Dow, S&P 500 and NASDAQ rallied by more than 1% on Halloween. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 closed at record highs and the NASDAQ is at its highest point since the March 2000 Dot-com peak.

Sysco and Sprint will report quarterly earnings before the opening bell. Herbalife will report after the close.

L'Oreal is expected to report after the close of trading in Paris.

HSBC reported earnings in the early morning. Third quarter underlying pre-tax profit fell 12%, in part because the global bank set aside $378 million U.S. to cover its exposure to an investigation into alleged rigging of the foreign exchange market. Its shares were about 0.5% lower in London trading.

The ISM Manufacturing Index is set to come out at 10 a.m. ET. At the same time, the U.S. government will report monthly construction spending.

Throughout the day, automakers will be releasing data on October car and truck sales.

European markets were edging lower in early trading. Asian markets ended with mixed results.

Oil prices gained 37 cents to $80.91 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices fell $1.30 to $1,170.30 U.S. an ounce.
