Gold shows way

Equities in Toronto moved higher on Tuesday as the gold-mining sector jumped after a selloff in the previous session, helping overcome weakness in energy shares spurred by a lower oil price.

The S&P/TSX composite index gained 50.47 points to conclude business at 14,760.27

The Canadian dollar moved higher 0.38 cents to 88.25 cents U.S.

Trading in Toronto was thin, with bond markets closed in observance of Remembrance Day.

Shares of energy producers reflected weakness in the price of oil. Talisman Energy gave back 0.9% to $6.58, and Encana lost 0.6% to $20.93.

The energy sector has been the biggest drag on the Canadian equity market in recent weeks, battered along with the oil price over concerns about increasing supply and sluggish demand.

The gold-mining sector climbed as Barrick Gold added 2.4% to $13.21, and Goldcorp advanced 2.4% to $22.21.

Techs slid as CGI Group docked 2.1% to $39.55, even as Aviglion rocketed 6.2% to $18.44.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange gained a solid 6.79 points to 772.29.

Nine of the 14 Toronto subgroups were higher on the day, with gold popping 5.2%, materials improving 2.5%, and the metals and mining group up 0.9%.

The five laggards were weighed mostly by information technology issues, off 0.9%, while consumer staples and real-estate each trailed 0.6%.

ON WALLSTREET

The Dow and S&P 500 inched up late Tuesday afternoon after both indexes managed to touch fresh intraday records for a fifth straight session in early trading.

The Dow Jones Industrials gained a miniscule 1.16 points to 17,614.90

The S&P 500 was up 1.42 at 2,039.68. The NASDAQ index gained 8.94 points to 4,660.56.

The S&P 500 has rallied more than 9% from a six-month low in October, buoyed by supportive economic data and solid corporate earnings reports. For the year, the index is up over 10%.

Among the S&P 500's biggest percentage decliners, the stock of Juniper Networks fell 4.5% , a day after the company's chief executive resigned following a board review of his conduct in a negotiation with a customer.

Shares of Alibaba were down 3.7%, retracing recent gains. The e-commerce giant reported more than $9 billion U.S. in sales on China's Singles' Day on Tuesday.

Cable providers remained under pressure for a second straight session after U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday that Internet service providers should be regulated more like public utilities. Comcast was down 0.2% and among the day's most actively trades shares.

As noted, bond markets were closed in honour of Veteran’s Day.

Oil prices recovered 37 cents to $77.77 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices gained $8.50 to $1,168.30 U.S. an ounce.
