Lower start foreseen in Toronto

Car, truck sales on tap


Stock futures pointed to a lower start for Canada's main stock index on Monday as oil prices dropped to fresh five-and-a-half-year lows.

The S&P/TSX composite index improved 121.21 points to end Friday at 14,753.65. March futures on the S&P TSX index were down 0.2%

The Canadian dollar shed 0.03 cents to 84.82 cents U.S. early Monday.

Yamana Gold Inc said it would seek the annulment of an Argentine court-appointed arbitrator's assessment that the company should pay $244 million to a director of Samco Gold Ltd.

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 11.29 points Friday to 706.82.

Futures projected lower early Monday, at the start of the first full trading week of 2015.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials slid 26 points, or 0.2%, to 17,697. Futures for the S&P 500 dipped 3.75 points, or 0.2%, to 2,042.50, and futures for the NASDAQ fell 6.25 points, or 0.2%, to 4,208.

Throughout the day, automakers will be releasing data on December car and truck sales.

It's expected that truck and SUV sales may have outpaced car sales

European markets are bouncing around in early trading, with no clear upward or downward trend.

The euro continues to plunge against the U.S. dollar as concerns intensify that Greece may be forced to leave the euro-zone if the country elects a radical, anti-austerity government at the end of the month.

Asian markets ended with mixed results. The standout performer was the Shanghai Composite index, which surged by 3.6% over the course of the day.

Oil prices tumbled $1.63 to $51.06 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $2.70 to $1,188.90 U.S. an ounce.
