Stocks enjoy small recovery

Alcoa, Sun Life in focus


Stocks experienced a slightly higher at the open on Tuesday, shaking off the cobwebs of a triple-digit loss Monday.

The S&P/TSX composite index advanced 45.09 points to begin Tuesday at 14,310.

The Canadian dollar acquired 0.16 cents to 83.68 cents U.S.

Goldcorp will take an impairment charge of up to $2.7 billion on its new Cerro Negro mine in Argentina in the fourth quarter, the world's biggest gold miner by value said on Monday as it also announced that 2014 output was below its own forecast. Goldcorp stock gained four cents to $25.76.

RBC cut the price target on CI Financial to $37.00 from $38.00. CI shares gained 18 cents to $31.53.

Barclays cut the price target on Sun Life Financial to $45.00 from $47.00. Sun shares took on 37 cents to $40.42.

The TSX Venture Exchange docked 0.77 points to 679.22

All but four of the 14 Toronto subgroups were higher in the early going, with consumer staples and information vying for the top spot, each gaining 0.9%, while consumer discretionary issues improved 0.8%.

The four laggards were weighed mostly by metals and mining, down 3%, while materials and global base metals were off 1%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stocks rallied on Tuesday, with equities bouncing back after a two-session drop, after aluminum-producer Alcoa kicked off the fourth-quarter earnings season by beating estimates.

The Dow Jones Industrials hurtled higher 260.03 points, or 1.5%, to 17,900.87, lifting the blue-chip index back into positive terrain for the year.

The S&P 500 regained 26.24 points to 2,054.50, with technology leading a broad advance that included all 10 major industry groups.

The NASDAQ index hiked 75.89 points to 4,740.60.

With the fourth-quarter earnings season started, investors are on the lookout for the effect of crude's decline on the S&P 500's collective bottom line.

Prices for 10-year U.S. Treasuries ditched some of their strength, raising yields to 1.94% from Monday’s 1.91%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices faded 53 cents per barrel to $45.54 U.S.

Gold prices gained $5.80 an ounce at $1,238.60 U.S.
