Oil recovers, futures with them

Ontario sells GM shares


Stock futures pointed to a higher start for Canada's main stock index on Thursday, with energy stocks set to rise as oil prices rebound.

The S&P/TSX composite index shed 67.23 points to close Wednesday at 14,999.65, with futures up 0.4% Thursday.

The Canadian dollar recovered 0.37 cents to 79.87 cents U.S. early Thursday.

Suncor Energy Inc, Canada's largest oil and gas company, reported on Wednesday a fall of more than 80% in quarterly profit, hit by the slide in oil prices and weaker output from its Alberta oil sands operations.

MEG Energy Corp reported a quarterly operating profit, compared with a loss a year earlier, helped by an increase in bitumen sales and higher prices.

The Canadian province of Ontario said on Wednesday it had sold its remaining shares in General Motors Co for about $1.1 billion.

Canaccord Genuity raised the rating on ATS Automation Tooling to buy from hold

Barclays cut the price target on Manitoba Telecom to $25.00 from $27.00, and on Intact Financial to $97.00 from $83.00.

Economically speaking, Statistics Canada reported this morning that our country’s imports hiked by 2.3% in December and exports rose 1.5%. That means Canada's merchandise trade deficit with the world widened from $335 million in November to $649 million in December.

U.S. stock futures are in the green ahead of the open.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials leaped 93 points, or 0.5%, to 17,661. Futures for the S&P 500 acquired 13.25 points, or 0.7%, to 2,043.25, and futures for the NASDAQ added 20 points, or 0.5%, to 4,224.

Dunkin Brands and Michael Kors are among the key companies reporting results before the opening bell.

Yum! Brands -- the company that owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell -- just reported results that showed the firm is still struggling in China after being slammed by a food scandal last year.

Shares in Keurig Green Mountain fell in extended trading after the company said it had a weaker than expected holiday season.

Watch trading in 21st Century Fox, which could be on the move after the company reported earnings late Wednesday.

The results impressed Wall Street, but CEO Rupert Murdoch delivered an apology to investors about poor ratings at Fox.

Twitter, LinkedIn, GoPro, and News Corp will report after the close.

The U.S. government posted weekly jobless claims, and December's trade balance also came out at the same time.

The main stock market index in Greece is getting pummeled and the rest of Europe's stock markets are down after the European Central Bank said late Wednesday that it would no longer accept Greek government bonds as collateral.

Greece's new government has been suggesting different ways for it to repay its massive bailout debts to its European partners, but the ECB move shows it faces an uphill battle.

Oil prices hiked 0.3% to $49.68 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices dipped 0.2% to $1,262.60 U.S. an ounce.
