TSX seen faltering at open

Kinross, Air Canada in focus


Stock futures pointed to a lower opening for Canada's main stock index on Wednesday.

The S&P/TSX composite index pulled ahead 11.82 points to close Tuesday at 15,112.52. March futures were down 0.4% early Wednesday.

The Canadian dollar faded 0.17 cents to 79.26 cents U.S. early Wednesday.

Air Canada reported a bigger quarterly net loss as a weak Canadian dollar contributed to a 9% rise in operating costs.

Kinross Gold Corp will not go ahead with a $1.6-billion expansion of its Tasiast mine in Africa's northwest because of the weak gold price. The Toronto-based miner also reported an unexpected fourth-quarter loss.

CIBC raised the price target on Avigilon to $28.00 from $25.00

Nomura cut the price target on First Quantum Minerals to $17.00 from $18.00

CIBC raised the price target on Intact Financial to $98.00 from $96.00

U.S. stock futures are looking soft and European markets are mostly trading lower.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials faded 49 points, or 0.3%, to 17,744. Futures for the S&P 500 dipped four points, or 0.2%, to 2,058.25, and futures for the NASDAQ slid 3.75 points, or 0.1%, to 4,272.25.

PepsiCo, Mondelez and Time Warner are reporting quarterly earnings before the opening bell.

Cisco, Tesla Motors and Whole Foods will report after the close.

Shares in ARM Holdings are rising by 4% in London after the tech company reported its latest set of quarterly results. The company designs the chips that are used in the vast majority of smartphones around the world.

Shares in Sky are falling by about 3% as investors react to news that the company is paying £4.2 billion ($6.4 billion U.S.) to air English Premier League soccer over the next three years. Investors think the company is overpaying -- the price is 83% more than Sky's current contract.

Sky is partially owned by Rupert Murdoch through 21st Century Fox.

Shares in BT, which bought the rights to a smaller number of EPL games, rose by 3%. It is paying much less than Sky per game.

European finance officials will hold emergency talks in Brussels at 11:30 a.m. ET in an attempt to map out the future of Greece's bailout program.

Greece is looking to secure a bridge loan for a few months, giving it time to hammer out a replacement to the existing bailout program which expires on February 28. The country's newly elected government wants to reverse a string of economic reforms in defiance of the terms set by its international lenders.

But its lenders in Europe -- which have collectively given Greece about €240 billion ($272 billion U.S.) over the past five years -- want Greece to stick to the terms of its bailout.

Oil prices slipped 0.1% to $49.95 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices inched up 0.3% to $1,236.40 U.S. an ounce.
