Ukraine ceasefire in focus


Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for Canada's main stock index on Thursday, tracking gains in global markets.

The S&P/TSX composite index moved higher 38.98 points to end Wednesday at 15,151.50, with March futures up 0.6% Thursday.

The Canadian dollar popped 0.63 cents to 79.81 cents U.S. early Thursday.

Bombardier Inc named a former United Technologies Corp executive as CEO, and reported a quarterly loss due to a $1.4-billion charge related to its decision to suspend its Learjet 85 business aircraft program.

Cenovus Energy Inc, Canada's second-largest independent oil producer, reported a quarterly loss that ballooned eight times and said it would cut 15% jobs, freeze salary hikes and cut discretionary spending as it adjusts to the slump in global crude prices.

Manulife Financial Corp reported a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter profit and warned macroeconomic factors such as low interest rates would produce "headwinds" in 2015.

Telus Corp, one of Canada's largest telecommunications companies, reported an 8% rise in quarterly profit as rising smartphone adoption and the expansion of LTE network boosted revenue in its wireless business.

CIBC raised the price target on Air Canada by $1.00 to $17.50

Canaccord Genuity cut the target price on Boardwalk REIT to $60.00 from $66.00. Canaccord also cut the target price on Mainstreet Equity Corp. to $42.50 from $45.00

Statistics Canada is out with its new housing price index for December, which posted a fourth consecutive 0.1% increase in December. Gains in Ontario and Alberta were moderated by a decline in Quebec.

U.S. stock futures and European markets are moving higher Thursday.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials soared 91 points, or 0.5%, to 17,922. Futures for the S&P 500 hiked 11.5 points, or 0.6%, to 2,077.25, and futures for the NASDAQ spiked 25.25 points, or 0.6%, to 4,321.75.

Dr. Pepper Snapple, World Wrestling Entertainment, Manchester United and Kellogg are reporting earnings before the opening bell.

CBS, Kraft and Zynga will report after the close.

Shares in Tesla declined in extended trading after the company posted earnings that missed analysts' expectations.

On the economic front, the U.S. government will report weekly jobless claims, while the U.S. Census Bureau will post January retail sales.

The main stock market index in Germany -- the DAX -- is rising by more than 1%.

Leaders from Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany have agreed on a ceasefire that's due to start Sunday. Those involved in the bloody conflict in Eastern Ukraine have agreed to pull back heavy weapons.

The main stock market index in Ukraine is surging by about 6%.

Most Asian markets ended the day with gains.

Gold prices took on 0.4% to $1,226.40 U.S. an ounce.
