Slightly lower open in forecast

Stock futures pointed to a slightly lower opening for indices in Toronto on Monday ahead of a busy week of corporate results.

The S&P/TSX composite index acquired 62.12 points to close the day and the week at 15,388.43. Futures hesitates 0.03% Monday.

The Canadian dollar dipped 0.35 cents to 79.16 cents U.S. early Monday.

Gold producers Alamos Gold and AuRico Gold said they would merge in a deal valued at about $1.5 billion.

U.S. stock futures are inching lower, European markets are mixed in early trading, while most Asian markets ended the day with gains.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials fell 29.02 points, or 0.2%, to 17,944. Futures for the S&P 500 faded four points, or 0.2%, to 2,091.50, and futures for the NASDAQ dropped 1.25 points to 4,413.50.

Shares in Qualcomm are rising by about 2.5% pre-market as investors get excited about the idea that the company could break itself up.

The Wall Street Journal reports that activist investor Jana Partners has been pushing for a strategic overhaul to boost the company's share price. Shares in the semiconductor company have slumped by about 7% since the start of the year.

In Germany, shares in Volkswagen are dipping by about 1.5% after weekend reports of a power struggle between the company's chairman and CEO.

The Treasury Department will release its monthly budget update at 2 p.m. ET.

Stock markets in China and Hong Kong posted impressive rallies, with the Hang Seng index surging by nearly 3%.

Oil prices added 91 cents to $52.55 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slumped $5.90 to $1,198.70 U.S. an ounce.
