Futures flat on new home data

Bombardier in focus


Futures pointed to a near-flat opening for Canada's main stock index on Thursday, ahead of data on new home prices for March.

The S&P/TSX composite index dropped 62.43 points to close Wednesday at 14,980.72, with June futures ahead 0.1%.

The Canadian dollar ducked back 0.05 cents to 83.57 cents U.S. early Thursday.

Bombardier plans to announce 1,800 job cuts in its aerospace division on Thursday, according to a newspaper report.

National Bank Financial raised the rating on Trican Well Services to outperform from sector perform

Canaccord Genuity raised the target price on Bird Construction to $9.50 from $8.50

BMO raised price target on Element Financial Corp to $21.00 from $19.00

Canadian financial authorities are unlikely to raise the country's inflation target after a review this year given the risk to the central bank's credibility and widespread support for the existing benchmark

On the economic scene, Statistics Canada revealed its new housing price index was unchanged in March, following a 0.2% increase in February

Economists expected new home prices to have risen 0.1% in March.

U.S. stock futures are looking relatively solid ahead of the open and the global bond market has stabilized after a bout of volatility.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials sprinted ahead 104 points, or 0.6%, to 18,119, futures for the S&P 500 gained 11.75 points, or 0.6%, to 2,106.25, and futures for the NASDAQ vaulted 30 points, or 0.7%, to 4,453.75

Shares of Shake Shack rose in extended trading after the company reported better-than-expected earnings.

Kohl's and British soccer club Manchester United are reporting ahead of the open.

Nordstrom and El Pollo Loco will report after the close.

The U.S. government reported on weekly jobless claims this morning.

European markets are mostly declining in early trading. Asian markets ended with mixed results.

Oil prices dipped 17 cents to $60.33 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices fell 90 cents to $1,217.30 U.S. an ounce.
